As I mentioned, this year I am striving to understand how we, as researchers, can tell better stories.
Lot’s of familiar names are signed in, so I’d be interested in hearing what you all thought of the presentation.
Andrew’s presentation covered a lot of great points, and some interesting areas for discussion. The key take-outs for me were:
- We are delivering our information in a ‘distractions’ environment. Now he didn’t explicitly say that people these days have no manners, but when you think about it – it is now hard to get through a presentation without someone taking a call, checking their phone (It was email, *cough*, facebook) or leaving the room. As such, it is increasingly important that we don’t waffle. We get straight to the point and deliver our information quickly. Otherwise it just won’t get heard
- Simplicity but not Simplistic. Yes, good point. I really like the word simplicity, but some may feel that it is too simple (as in dumb, slow etc). Andrew introduced the term simplexity. Simple enough to be heard, but complex enough not to be ‘simple’.
- One of the key tips was to ‘Frame the findings in the context of the end user‘: This is a great point. One of the key ways to ‘edit’ your information down may be to think about it from the point of view of your audience. What do they need to know? What will they find interesting? Rather than what you thought was interesting. As I spoke about in my post the other day, we have a desire to share all that we’ve found. However, we need to fight that urge and edit, so that our message is heard.
Lot’s of food for thought in the presentation. And delivered quickly and concisely too (it is a great thing to have a presenter who is not rushing through their slides because they’ve got too much content for time. That is definitely a benefit of keeping in simple!)
