One of the things I love about conferences, is the great quotes people use in their talks to illustrate points or provoke thought.  Here are a few of my favourites from AMSRS 2015*:

“The early bird catches the worm. But, the second mouse gets the cheese” – …..

“Don’t let yourself down” – Richie McCaws Dad

“The world needs banking, the world does not need banks” – Bill Gates

“80% of the secret of success is just turning up” – Woody Allen

“The only place that success comes before work is in the dictionary” – Vidal Sassoon
Chris Savage, in his talk How to keep yourself relevant and contemporary

“Emotions drive our behaviour; the world is driven by emotions… Rational thought leads consumers to be interested but it is emotion that sells” – Al Ries & Jack Trout

“Emotional appeal governs the attention that people pay to advertising” – John Philip Jones, Erik du Plessis

James Guerrier, in his talk Power of Laughter: Measuring the effectiveness of comedy in generating positive audience engagement

“Success is a lousy teacher. It seduces smart people into thinking they can’t lose. And it’s an unreliable guide to the future” – Bill Gates

“When experts are wrong, it’s often because they’re experts on an earlier version of the world… it’s hard enough already not to become a prisoner of your own expertise, but it will only get harder, because change is accelerating” – Paul Graham

“Success is the ability to go from one failure to the next with no loss of enthusiasm” – Winston Churchill

Jeffrey Henning,  in his talk Falling Forward

“Big Data is like teenage sex, Everyone is talking about it, Nobody really knows how to do it, Everyone thinks everyone else is doing it, so everyone claims they are doing it too” – Dan Ariely.

Leigh Shaw, in her talk  Where Have All The Insights Gone?

“Life is a long game”

“Every trauma in your life is a future motivation”

“Stay in the job until you learn to respect the person you don’t like”
